Creating Joyful Holidays: Fostering a Sense of Belonging for Our Residents

Over the holidays we hosted a number of celebrations to help foster a familial environment for our residents. For many of our residents, Christmas as well as many other holidays, can contribute to an increase in symptoms. Specifically, in terms of those clients who may wish to be home for the holidays or those clients who may not have any family support, holidays can be difficult to cope with. Around the holidays, we often see clients expressing an increase in depressive mood or even heightened anxiety. Celebrating with and for them during these times helps to increase positive mood and fosters an environment of social interaction that gives them a sense of connectedness and belonging. For many of our clients, sometimes these celebratory events and activities are the first time they’ve ever had that experience. Attached you will find pictures from each of those celebrations within our regions. SJC1 and SJC2 hosted a client winter wonderland-themed ball filled with music, dancing, and sweet treats. Merced hosted a formal dinner with a hot cocoa bar and a dance to follow. Solano took our residents out for an evening dinner followed by music and dancing. On Christmas day, each of the residents woke to unwrap an assortment of gifts provided on behalf of GLOM.
